I watched a chilling documentary tonight called MICHELLE REMEMBERS, about the book of the same name that started the big "Satanic Panic" of the 80s. I remember all of the media attention that these supposed crimes caused back then...It was on every magazine cover and talk show. The story behind the Psychiatrist and patient who wrote the book together, and the hysteria that ensued, is just amazing. So many lives were ruined by this story and others that it inspired. It's streaming on Prime, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you for reminding me about this one. I saw the trailer a while back and it promptly disappeared from memory. My wife and I do Documentary Sundays, so we're always on the look out for new ones to watch.

So I "had" to resubscribe to Netflix because my whole household loves The Great British Bake Off.

What are some must see movies or shows? (I admit, I haven't scrolled through this thread so forgive me if there's a post called "Must See Netflix Movies and Shows for TacomaDiver" - that's on me.)

Not much of a Netflix watcher, but there's a new sea monster mini-series coming in a week or so, starring Josh Hartnett, the name of which escapes me.....

Saw the trailer for this and unless the reviews are terrible, and Ron seems to have some scuttlebutt that might not be the case, I'll be checking this out, but probably after Halloween. I have too many movies lined up and I'll need to squeeze in Lanterns as well.

Below!  I had to look it up because all I could come up with was Dredge bug that's a video game.

The other day I read an article online whose headline was basically "Why is no one talking about PSYCHO KILLER, the best Horror movie of the year?" I already had the film on my watch list, but that moved it up to the top.

Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote SE7EN, and nothing else ever that was any good, PSYCHO KILLER had me from the beginning, as the opening credits reveal that the titular killer is a "Satanic Slasher", and I'm all about devil/demon movies. Gimme! High hopes!

Should have kept the expectations low.

This was a strange movie, as it started out strong, and became more sloppy and disjointed as it went along. Strange storytelling beats, odd cuts and edits, CGI blood, which always looks super-fake...The film takes a crazy story turn towards the end, which excited me because there was SOOO much that could have been done with it, but it all just falls flat, before a literal last-second reveal that had me like "Huh...?" The set-up for this reveal happens about 5 seconds before the reveal, so it was something that made almost zero sense.

Coulda been a contender if it was handled even remotely competently, but my advice would be to skip this mess.

I was excited about this when it was first announced. Then I found out it's a trunk script from the 90s that the director has been carrying around forever trying to get made. It's a bummer because, while I agree with his output after SE7EN never reaches those heights (SE7EN is also a freaking masterpiece that), I at least found 8MM and THE KILLER interesting misfires.

@sock_monkey I thought 8MM was good, but so, so predictable. I was hoping for a twist or two along the way, but it played out exactly as expected.

We finished LANTERNS, and by the end, I was over it. SO many stupid things happened in this show.

Spoiler
Spoilers!
The greatest Green Lantern lets his ring charge run out? And he keeps his Lantern hours away from where he is? The Manhunter, the deadliest being in the universe, can be killed by a rifle shot to the head? A Manhunter can just make another Manhunter? You can take a dead ring and BANG ON IT to get a low charge???
I honestly struggle to even understand why the first five episodes were even necessary. The whole "Rancher with a secret" plot was a complete dud. I really irritated me that Hal was such an asshole, too. I came away from the show liking John, but I'd have preferred if Hal hadn't been shit on for the whole series. And don't even get me started on why you would take on a property with a HUGE, expansive mythology and...set it on Earth, just showing two guys walking around together and talking. Next up: A Batman series where Bruce and Alfred chill out and have tea in the Batcave every episode? Supposedly LANTERNS has been renewed, and Damon Lindelof is stepping back from writing, which is good, but Tom King is staying, and he's another one who loves the endless flashbacks and flashforwards and endless talking and talking and talking. This show really needs to step it up next season.

Been doing a lot of Halloween viewing lately. In addition to bingeing Mike Flanagan's CARRIE, which I discuss in its own thread, recent viewing has included:

EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC- I thought I'd give this a rewatch after a few decades, and...it's still awful. I've always felt that the technology, especially fantastic (fake) technology, is the enemy of Horror, and the inclusion of the machine which lets people share dreams was just too ridiculous an obstacle to overcome.

BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL- A documentary about Director John Boorman and the making of EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC. I've wondered for decades "What were they thinking...?". Well, now I know. This film makes Boorman out to be a cinematic genius, which I've just never seen. The only film of his that I consider to be truly great is DELIVERANCE, with maybe HOPE & GLORY as a runner-up. A lot of things conspired to make the sequel the huge misfire that it was, but first and foremost, hiring Boorman, a man who wanted to make a hopeful, uplifting "answer" to the original film, was the biggest fuckup. The death of Lee J. Cobb, Linda Blair's refusal to undergo possession make-up, Richard Burton's drunkenness...there's a lot to take in here. A fascinating film, but it deifies Boorman way too much.

BIG DRIVER- A Lifetime movie based on a Stephen King story. (!!!) If it didn't say "A LIFETIME ORIGINAL MOVIE" in the opening credits, I would never have guessed. Well-written, competently made and professional-looking, well acted (Maria Bello, Olympia Dukakis, Ann Dowd, Joan Jett)...Basically King's take on the old rape/revenge trope, I was pretty impressed by how much I enjoyed it.

THE UNHOLY THREE- The original silent version, with Lon Chaney, about a trio of circus performers who set up a criminal enterprise, directed by Tod Browning. This film has been burned into my brain for decades, based on the bonkers (sort-of...) ending involving a gigantic ape on a rampage (A chimp on small sets), which is absolutely unforgettable. Beyond pitch black in tone, the film is undone by the ludicrous happy ending. I'm tempted to watch the talkie remake, but a guy in a gorilla suit has to be a letdown after this slice of insanity.

Well, I now refute any positive reviews I may have read about Below. My wife and I watched the series last night, and it was wincingly bad. A disappointment by every measure. 1 out of 5. Not recommended...it's not even worth the effort to explain why...just preserve a few hours of your life and avoid this time drain.

Well, that's disappointing. I was hoping for something surprising and unexpected.
