[#131]

I'm not exactly a slasher fan in general, or a FRIDAY THE 13TH fan in particular, but the good reviews for Peacock's prequel series, CRYSTAL LAKE, drove me to give it an episode or two to catch my interest.

I ended up bingeing four of the eight episodes last night. I'm not a F13 continuity fanatic, so I don't know how closely the shows sticks to the lore of the films, but I'm enjoying connecting the dots and seeing the pieces fall into place. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, and the first episode shows the death of her son, the soon-to-be-infamous Jason, and the next three lay some interesting clues out, which may hopefully explain Jason's future immortality. Oddly enough, Jason himself is such a sweet little kid that it makes knowing how he will end up even more heartbreaking. I was really hoping to wrap the season up tonight, but we had a family movie night. I'm not usually a big binge-watcher, so for me to do four episodes is pretty amazing. Not that the series is THAT good, but it's pretty enjoyable, so far. I hope they can stick the landing, and I hope they can wrap this up neatly. Not every series needs multiple seasons...

Good to hear. I’m not a slasher fan at all, so I was gonna skate on by this one. However, if it wraps up well, let us know. Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

I finished the series tonight, and the last four episodes were as much fun as the first four. Whoever wrote this show must have a fetish for mouth-related gore, lol. Jaw trauma abounds!

Spoiler
Minor spoiler!
I'm not a big fan of prequels, as they're usually just meaningless money-grabs that don't tell you anything you didn't already know. Be warned, however, this prequel could change the way you view the original and the sequels, since it gives a reason for Jason's, um...resilient nature.

I enjoyed this series enough that I'm going to try to tackle the F13 film series again. I haven't seen the original since I was a kid, and I don't recall EVER seeing parts 2 & 3.

I watched FRIDAY THE 13TH last night and...not a good film. Whatever instinct had kept me from watching this for close to five decades (Because I don't really remember any of it, and I doubt I ever sat and watched it all before) was certainly correct. The writing was laughable, the acting wooden, the kills stupid (How did Mrs. Voorhees get under the bed to stab Kevin Bacon? Didn't they notice the corpse on top of the bunk bed while they were screwing?), just a moronic film.

Odd detail: I wonder why they chose to make Jason deformed? It's hardly a plot point. Mrs. Voorhees kinda-sorta implies that Jason was a special needs kid, but still, whoever added that visual detail really made it possible for this dud to become a franchise.

I agree but likely due to nostalgia I still enjoy watching this every 4-5 years.

You know, I've never watched the original Friday the 13th. Beyond Scream and the original Black Christmas, I'm really not a slasher guy. In fact, the only Jason film I've seen was Jason Goes to Hell, which I saw way too many times on cable back in the day, just because I couldn't figure the darn movie out. What a mess.

I watched FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 last night. Another one that I've seen bits and pieces of through the years, but don't think I've ever really watched from start to finish. I liked the five years later aspect, as it reinforced the idea that Jason just kills people who trespass in "His" woods. He was dormant until this new bunch of victims set up shop next to Camp Blood. The victims remain caricatures that you really can't develop any empathy or interest in, but I was shocked to see Ralph die. I assumed he was untouchable, as he seems to have been living in the woods, unharmed, since the CRYSTAL LAKE days. The first film DID mention that he had a wife, something the Peacock show either ignored or forgot...Maybe Ralph got married between the show and the films, and settled down in town? Probably giving this way more thought than it deserves. The kills were bland, but the film was short and briskly paced, aside from the opening, which was literally twelve minutes of the final girl from the first film wandering around her apartment.

Better than the original, but not much. On to PART THREE!

I'll admit to watching this in the theater when it was released. As a teenager and big slasher fan at the time I'll say I enjoyed it**... then. I don't think I've seen it since and not overly surprised it didn't hold up over the years.

**In my defense: back then it was all about the jump scares and the deaths.

You must be just a little bit older than me. I was 9 when the first F13 came out. The first one I was old enough to see in a theater was the fourth one. Boobs, jump scares, and gore was the name of the game back then, lol.

Watched FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 tonight, and it was more of a step in the right direction. The filmmakers at least tried for a LITTLE character development. (VERY little, but at least the final girl had some backstory to her, even if the rest were just a nameless rabble of victims.) Jason dons his iconic hockey mask for the first time, the kills get a little more inventive (The guy walking on his hands...), and there's an unexpected nod to the first film's boat jump scare at the end. Nothing Earth-shattering, but the movie goes by at a brisk pace, and I had fun.

That is highly accurate.
