Yeah Marvel's OOP editions is quite frustrating. While they seem to have less evergreen titles compared to DC, there are some titles that should always be in print. PAD's Hulk, Claremont's X-Men, Bendis's Daredevil for example. Not sure they need to keep Micronauts or The Nam in print all of the time.
I'm not the biggest fan of omnibuses, I'd rather have smaller oversized collections, but they are great for collecting full runs or stories.
I picked up the huge Kirby DC omnibus a few years back, that had THE DEMON in it, and I loved his work on that series/character. Not everything in the omnibus was as fun as ol' Etrigan, but it was a solid collection. The FOURTH WORLD omnibus was great...it was nice to be able to read the work in chronological order, rather than as series-centric collections. Kirby...not a great writer, but I've really come to appreciate his art and massive ideas as I've grown older.

I agree, the niche stuff probably doesn't need to be constantly in print, and the rotation in and out of print would make solid business sense. Some of the other stuff boggles the mind. It's even more confusing when you see later volumes in print, but the first couple are OOP. One has to wonder how many sales they miss out on due to this.

Good to hear a vote for Kirby's The Demon. I've heard it's "lesser" Kirby--I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere Kirby wasn't too thrilled with doing The Demon in the first place--so some people write it off. Since I've recently pulled together a lot of the post-Crisis stuff--Wagner's mini and the full run of the Grant/Ennis run--I thought it might be fun to read the originals before dipping into the rebooted versions.
I've little experience with The Fourth World books. I do have a TPB of the first 10 issues of Mister Miracle, but it's in black and white, so I keep pushing it off. The new DC Finest Collections seem like a good way to dig into the series. I will agree that Kirby's imagination is a thing of beauty, though.

You'd do well to read Kirby's DEMON run before the newer ones, as a lot of the supporting cast and villains just kind of appear in the newer series, leaving me to wonder for decades "Why is that pillow alive...?", among other burning questions.
Looks like DC is going all in on Swamp Thing. Two new massive slipcased hardcover collections are being released this year and next. The first is Dark Genesis collecting nearly everything save a few issues prior to the advent of Alan Moore era. This is set to be released this year. Next year, we have an updated Alan Moore set. These look nice, but pricey. MSRP is $150 for Dark Genesis and $175 for the Alan Moore set. (For transparency, the first picture is an early release photo I found on the web).
Here's a couple of links for the Swamp Thing books if anyone is curious about the details.

I'm super excited for these new editions since they're going to fix the coloring issues previous editions have had.
I was just wondering why DC hadn't collected the Moore run in an omnibus yet...
They've done Absolute editions but they remastered the colors which were universally hated. And I think prior to that they did a Saga of the Swamp Thing tpb boxset that had less offensive coloring.
And while not as bad as Marvel, the Absolute Swamp Things have gone in and out of print a few times too.

I picked up two Taschen massive volumes from their Labor Day 50% off sale...one was their XXL edition of their Frank Frazetta volume (which has some comic content), and the other was the XXL edition of their near-600 page history of EC Comics (Tales from the Crypt, etc.) in striking full color. Damn, but these things are HUGE...I knew they were coffee-table sized, but I didn't appreciate just how gloriously large they were going to be. Anyhow, had to drop a mention of that...I don't do comics, so this EC mention'll probably stay my one and only contribution to this thread. Very excited to read them both!

I didn't know anything about that EC comics book until you posted about it recently and now I'm waiting for another sale to hit (...and some extra money!) to pick up a copy for myself. It looks really cool!

Yeah, I've seen comparisons of the coloring online and it kills a lot of the nuance the originals had. I was this close to pulling the trigger on that TPB boxset (and still might), then I heard about the Alan Moore omnibus. Though, to be honest, I hate to go that route because my collector's OCD will require me to pick up the Dark Genesis set and I'm not sure how much I'll dig Bronze Age Swamp Thing. I mean, I could show some patience because it looks like they've kicked off a Swamp Thing series in the DC Finest line, which I'm assuming will eventually run through Moore's run and probably Veitch's, if it is selling well enough at that point. That'd be years down the road, though.

There's a smaller hardcover edition for under $30 if you don't need the XXL good-lord-it's-gloriously-huge edition. It reads the same, presumably, and is still in full color:

Thanks, Ron! This is probably the route I'm going to take. I'd love that XXL edition, but there is a lot less chance of 'buyer's remorse' at the lower price point.
