I'd been curious about T. Kingfisher's SWORN SOLDIER trio of novellas for a while now, so I was happy to see Subterranean Press collect them into one impressive volume.

I've only read the first novella, WHAT MOVES THE DEAD, so far, but I enjoyed the slow burn buildup of the story, which inserts Kingfisher's protagonist Alex Easton into the events of Poe's FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. The cover and interior illustrations by John Jude Palencar are absolutely gorgeous.

Finished THE SWORN SOLDIER, and really enjoyed the trio of novellas. As usual, Subterranean has created a beautiful package. The cover and interior art, by John Jude Palencar, are beautiful. Kingfisher maintains a slow, deliberate pace in all three novellas, which really pays off. You have time to get to know and love the characters, especially Alex Easton, the protagonist. I loved the way she integrated Easton and company into Poe's HOUSE OF USHER story, and her "villain" in the third novella was very unexpected and original.

Overall, a highly recommended collection for readers looking for some slow-burn gothic Horror.

Man, I was kinda hoping you'd give a bad review so I wouldn't feel tempted to track down a copy. Now if I blow the budget and buy a copy, it's all your fault. I hope you can handle the guilt. 🙂
