What Shows are you Streaming

 I finished DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, which was simultaneously very exciting and incredibly dumb. Great season 2 finale, but the machinations of The Kingpin were so over the top, the way the show treated Bullseye, the lingering side-effects of the really pointless killing that opened up season 1...I'll avoid spoilers, but there were a LOT of stupid story beats.

 I've slowly started watching THE PUNISHER. Two episodes in, and it's...OK. Not sold yet. 

 On the movie side, I watched a double-feature of READY OR NOT and READY OR NOT: HERE I COME, both of which were great fun. As I said when I posted about THEY WILL KILL YOU, I'll watch anything with a Satanic cult in it, lol. And speaking of Satan, or "Sah-tahn", I watched THE CARPENTER'S SON last night. It was sold as a "Teen-aged Jesus Horror film", but it was basically just a movie about Jesus as a teen-ager, encountering temptation by the aforementioned "Sah-tahn", which made me laugh every time they said it. It's a low-budget film, which plays the subject matter seriously, and it wasn't bad. Nicholas Cage, as Joseph, is slightly hammy, but he is a good actor when he tries. FKA Twigs as Mary was...a choice, I guess. She does a decent job, but her plastic-surgery face and perpetually stoned expression was very distracting. The girl that played The Devil was suitably creepy. Not a bad way to pass 90 minutes.

Re-watching the Detectorists. It's a quaint little show perfect for just chilling out.

 I watched the first episode of LANTERNS, which was pretty good. I'm in limbo now, because my wife fell asleep, and I can't watch episode 2 until she catches up...I've also been watching CONAN WITHOUT BORDERS, which is hilarious. The new season of CONAN O'BRIEN MUST GO is also excellent.

I watched the first episode of LANTERNS as well and really liked it.  I’m a huge Kyle Chandler fan, so there was an admittedly low bar to cross. However, I’m also a big GL fan overall, so I’m still rather wary as to where the episode is going to go, especially given episode one’s ending. I have decided to wait to binge the whole thing after the season is completed, so I’m sure you’ll finish it before me, even with the wife delay!

I watched the first episode of LANTERNS as well and really liked it.  I’m a huge Kyle Chandler fan, so there was an admittedly low bar to cross. However, I’m also a big GL fan overall, so I’m still rather wary as to where the episode is going to go, especially given episode one’s ending. I have decided to wait to binge the whole thing after the season is completed, so I’m sure you’ll finish it before me, even with the wife delay!

 

 I read a pretty good theory about the ending, so we'll see if that plays out. 

 I watched a few newish movies this week:

 RED SONJA, a recent take on the barbarian character, was pretty low-budget, but much better than I expected it to be. The effects were surprisingly good, especially considering my low expectations.

 Last night I watched the reboot of SCARY MOVIE (The extended edition), which pretty much sucked. I think I chuckled once at the film, and the meta ending was fun, but, yeah...don't waste your time.

 One fun aspect of my son's girlfriend, Anna, spending so much time with us is that I get to introduce her to films that she has not only never seen, but usually never even heard of. JAWS, GREMLINS, other classics...She's been having fun discovering things that are new to her. The other night we were poking around looking for something to stream, and she decided that HEREDITARY looked interesting. By the time it was over, she was a basket-case, and my wife was furious at me for letting her watch it. (My wife was also very scared, and declared "That was FUCKED! UP!") I had to accompany my wife and son as they drove Anna home, walk Anna to her door, and make sure she was safely with her grandmother in a well-lit room before I could leave. And no hug goodbye! Poor kid was terrified. (As someone whose mother thought it would be OK to let him watch THE EXORCIST at age 7, I thought this was all hilarious, personally.) I told my wife that we all benefit from a good scare occasionally, but we'll take a break from Horror for a little while. Anna invited herself over tonight to watch a film, so I'm thinking the new SUPERGIRL will probably be safe... 

 So we did end up watching SUPERGIRL tonight. I wasn't expecting much, consider the brutal reviews, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I thought it was on a par with last year's SUPERMAN, probably an 8 out of 10. Too much CGI (Dogs are real creatures...why did Krypto have to be fully CGI? Maybe get a trained dog...?), and it tried WAY too hard to be GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, from the songs to the sets and the look of the film. Really minor quibbles that didn't do much to spoil my enjoyment of the film. Looking forward to seeing Kara on screen again.

Ended up ditching Netflix after many years. Think all the way back to DVDs. 

Trying out AppleTV and struggling with it so far. Severance was a no go for me. I could not connect with that show at all.

Moved unto Pluribus which is just okay. Rhea is pretty good however her character is entitled acting. Not really my jam. The story itself is interesting but a little to plodding for me. There is the Hugh Howey adaption that I will likely try and a few more things.

Moved unto Pluribus which is just okay. Rhea is pretty good however her character is entitled acting. Not really my jam. The story itself is interesting but a little to plodding for me. There is the Hugh Howey adaption that I will likely try and a few more things. 

We shall see. 

I've been enjoying AppleTV quite a bit. Ted Lasso is upbeat fun, Shrinking is decent if uneven, For All Mankind is pretty solid. Widow's Bay, however, is my favorite show of the last few years. I'd give that one a go if you haven't all ready.

I took my daughter to see Hereditary in the theaters when she was 16 and she was not prepared for it. Granted, I hadn't seen it, either, and had no clue what I was getting her into. I look back on it fondly, although I'm not sure my daughter feels the same way. 🙂

 SILO is really good, as are: SUGAR, FOR ALL MANKIND, MONARCH, SLOW HORSES, and probably a bunch more I'm missing. We ditched Apple a year ago, because they signed me out, and had no way to recover my password or give me access. The Apple reps were fucking useless. I had to put a block on my credit card, because they intended to keep charging me for something that I had no access to. I do miss the aforementioned shows, but when we resubscribe, I'll do it through Amazon.

I would likely agree. The sign in protocols, passkey thing, scanning stuff, is a little beyond me. If anything ever happens, as it did to you, I will probably be screwed as well.

I really love it. My wife hates it, but loves Midsommer. I haven't really followed Ari Aster down his non-horror path with Beau is Afraid and Eddington. I did watch Bugonia, but that had nothing to do with him as a director (I actually forgot he directed it until I right now when I looked up his filmography) and more to do with the Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, with the latter becoming a favorite of mine.

 She ruined the twist, but the kids ended up enjoying it anyway. I don't think I've really sat and watched it since I first saw it in a theater on opening weekend. I forgot what a damned great film it is! Hayley Joel Osment was amazing, and should have won an Oscar. I think it really stands out as one of the best Horror films ever.
