Sports Cards

I was really into the NBA cards back in the early 90s. But that was also when I was really into the NBA.

I do remember a special set of Hoops that you could only get at Sears (if my eBay skills are up to par, some people are asking a ridiculous amount for that set!) back when David Robinson was a rookie.

My buddy got me interested in them - he was a huge basketball fan at the time. 

But that was probably the last time I paid attention to sports cards.

I was more nerdy so I had a ton of the Marvel Comics trading cards. Sadly I dumped all of those a little over seven years ago when I moved. And by dumped, I mean they got loaded into the back of a truck and taken to the dump.  🙁 

@tacomadiver Late 80's early 90s was when I collected the most. When I started to explore the hobby again this year I found out my entire collection was almost worthless. I was a little bummed but it was fun going back through all my old cards. 

I have now parsed my collection down to almost only baseball. I sold the few value cards from my NBA and NFL collections and kept a few nice 2nd year Gretzky cards. Sold my MJ's for a nice little profit and donated a ton of stuff throughout the community. 

A few months ago I went to my first card show and donated a bunch of cards there as well. Cards that have value between $2-$5/each, which no vendor would touch, and I wasn't going to spend the time on Ebay grinding out some sales. 

Reminds me a bit of when I tried to sell my comic collection from the late 80s - early 2000s. Nothing had any value so I ended up dumping most of the issues somewhere (I know I traded a ton for a LaserDisc player after high school - I still own that player.)

And then all of a sudden (well within the last 10 years say) I see quite a few of those issues having some actual value (hello first appearance of Deadpool and all of those McFarlane ASM issues.)

I still have a good amount of those. Sadly I actually read my comics and the copies I have wouldn't have much monetary value. Still fun to own for my PC.

Speaking of comics, when I lived overseas, I remember that EVERY issue had those inserts for jewelry and I've only recently learned that there is a pretty significant premium in the collectors' space for issues with those inserts. Just amazing to me. 

@tacomadiver I will be completely honest. Comics never interested me and I know near nothing about them. So, I have to ask. What on earth is a jewelry insert in relation to a comic book?

@tacomadiver Thank you, I have never heard of this before.

Seeing that link specifically mention those ads being inserted in books bought on military bases explains a lot - when I moved to the Philippines in 1986, we lived on base (San Miguel for a bit but mostly Subic), all of my comics had these ads.

Definitely niche and kind of ridiculous they're treated as some rare variant, but collectors are an odd bunch.  🙂

Nah. That money supported moments of joy, learning, and created lifetime memories. Price be damned!

Yeah, these are often considered variants of the regular issues and actually are listed differently on sites like mycomicshop.com. I don't get it. Just like I don't understand why some collector's put stock in newsstand versus direct market versions of comics.
