Woodworking Tools

Some of you may remember some of my posts on the old CD forums about my woodworking dabblings.

My biggest projects were building all of the bookshelves in my basement and my wife's comic book filing cabinet. Also I've made my fair share of cutting boards and charcuterie boards along with a bunch of other random projects.

A few years ago I learned that my uncle was a woodworker - something I either never knew before or just forgot. And pretty much every project from that point forward, I kept thinking about wanting to show him, but I also wanted it to be a good project to show off.

Sadly, my uncle passed away unexpectedly last month, and I just got back from his memorial service.

While talking to my aunt, I mentioned to her what I've been building and how I wanted to show my uncle, but didn't get the chance. She told me I was welcome to go through his tools and take whatever I wanted.

Here are some of the things my aunt allowed me to take - I'm really looking forward to using these in my shop. My aunt said some of these were actually my uncle's grandfather's!

A small combination square. Unsure of the age.

This is a Stanley No 51 Spoke Shave. Unsure of its age, but on the older side.

Stanley 200 Block Plane - also on the older side.

Stanley No 5 Jack Bench Plane. This is the one I'm most excited about. If I did it right, it's definitely from the late 1890s (exact dating requires being able to see the writing on a piece that is VERY FAINT) and looks like it's in remarkable shape. I can tell that my uncle used this.

I've never used handtools before, but now I have the perfect opportunity to learn.
