Bryan Fuller's latest, DUST BUNNY, is streaming on HBO Max. My son passed on watching it with me, saying the trailer "looks too weird". The film WAS weird, but very enjoyable.

DUST BUNNY is kind of a monster-centric retelling of Luc Besson's film THE PROFESSIONAL, with a dash of JOHN WICK, if written by Roald Dahl and directed by Tim Burton on a peyote trip.

Aurora, a young girl whose foster parents abruptly vanish one night, discovers that her neighbor is an assassin, and hires him to kill the monster under her bed that she believes killed them.

Mads Mikkelsen plays the hired killer, and brings a laid-back, sardonic charm to the role. He's convinced that the monster doesn't exist, and that Aurora's parents were mistakenly killed by assassins sent to terminate him. Sophie Sloan is fun as 10 year-old Aurora; Her deadpan performance got a lot of laughs out of me. David Dastmalchian and Sigourney Weaver have smaller roles, but both were excellent, especially Weaver, who seems to be having a ball as a conscienceless string-puller. (Meaningless aside: Weaver is 76 years old, and looks AMAZING. A great example of an actress just aging gracefully and not destroying herself with plastic surgery.)

The effects were good...It all looked like CGI to me, but puppeteers were listed in the credits, so...who knows? The wild colors and whimsical atmosphere gave the film a unique vibe, but I was surprised at how much Fuller borrowed/stole from THE PROFESSIONAL, which is an all-time favorite of mine. The hitman/child relationship, Weaver's restaurant sitdowns with Mikkelsen, the final jam-packed apartment showdown...Fuller must love the film as much as I do.

Overall, a fun time for Horror/action fans.

I've loved Mikkelsen ever since the Hannibal tv show, which was criminally underrated and due for a rewatch. This was already on my TBW list, but now that you made comparisons to The Professional, I need to move this up a notch. Maybe a double feature of the two would be fun. I have two weeks left of school (at which point the undergraduate degree will be completed!), so I'm going to try pencil this in for a watch shortly after.

Curious to hear your thoughts! And congrats on the undergraduate degree, bro!

I hadn't realized you posted about this movie @dannyboy121070

We caught this last night and I really enjoyed it.

Loved the colors and the costumes and set design. I hadn't realized that Bryan Fuller was behind Pushing Daisies, but I could definitely see the similarities.

Maybe this summer I'll rewatch/catch up on HANNIBAL...I lost track after the first season, and never got back into it.

Thanks! I'm pretty excited to have finally achieved this goal. I'm starting a three-year grad program in the fall, so I'm trying to enjoy this milestone a bit before it all begins again!

It's been a while, so my thoughts could change on a rewatch, but I thought season two is where the show really started to click. I've had the third season on DVD since it came out (back in 2016!!), but my wife was never a big fan, so I've kept pushing off a rewatch. I have a pretty heavy watch schedule this summer--I want to get through my big backlog of unwatched movies on DVD and Bluray--but maybe I can squeeze this show in.

I hear you about the backlog/wish list of shows and movies. When the weather warms up, I start watching TV in the sunroom, alone, catching up on the things my wife will not watch with me all winter, lol. I've been meaning to watch DAREDEVIL and the rest of the old Netflix Marvel shows for years now....Adding HANNIBAL to the ever-growing list.

Oh, man. Don't bring up the old Netflix Marvel shows because I still need to get around to them myself. Well, at least Daredevil, The Punisher, and maybe The Defenders. I tried Luke Cage, and while I loved the lead actor, I just couldn't get into the show. Jessica Jones season one was solid, maybe I'll revisit it and the other two (?) seasons of that show. Oof. Even with shortened seasons that's a big list.

And I haven't caught up with Peacemaker, The Boys and Gen V, Invincible, and one day I swear to God, I'll finally finish watching Buffy and Angel...

PEACEMAKER was a lot of fun, I can recommend that one wholeheartedly.
