I finished four in September.
1. A Little Silver Book: A Screenplay by Richard Chizmar & Jonathan Schaech was a screenplay of Black House by King & Straub. All the problems you would expect with trying to turn a 600 page novel into a 90 minute screenplay. 2.5 / 5
2. Weird Tales: The Early Years edited by Stephen Jones was a lot of fun. An anthology of the best stories from the beginnings of Weird Tales magazine in the 1920s. As with any large anthology (this included 30 stories in all), not all of the stories were winners (some of the attempts at science fiction stories certainly come off on the silly side). But there is certainly enough classic stories to satisfy any weird fiction enthusiast. 3.5 / 5
3. Carmilla by JS Le Fanu holds up on multiple rereads. A vampire story published 25 years before Dracula, Carmilla remains a horror classic. 5 / 5
5. Whalefall by Daniel Kraus was a mixed bag for me. Ridiculous premise aside, I really liked the first 2/3 of story. It’s told in very short chapters that keeps the pace flowing, alternating between the now (Jay in the whale) & flashbacks of Jay’s life (mainly his struggles growing up with his father). But the last third of book had too many eye-rolling moments, too many convenient coincidences, and just got way too philosophical. 2.5 / 5
B
Finished 3 (although I read probably 2/3 of another book in the last few days of the month).
- The Lost Ones by Chris DiLeo. Supernatural mystery/thriller - a laid off school teacher tries to solve a missing child cold case, and begins to suspect there may be a serial killer involved. Reviewed here - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Black House by Stephen King & Peter Straub. Book 2 of The Talisman series - Jack Sawyer rediscovers The Territories (and more!) while on the hunt for a serial killer. Reviewed here - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Lilly Rising by Cathy Southwell. Supernatural action/thriller with lots of intrigue and plots within plots. Reviewed here - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I read 46 in September.
Marvel Premiere Classic, Vol. 99: Iron Man- Revenge of The Mandarin (6)
The Invincible Iron Man by Kurt Busiek & Sean Chen Omnibus (9)
The Adventures of Red Sonja, Volume III (7)
Nuclear War: A Scenario (7) One of the scariest books that I've ever read, but it loses points because there are only so many ways you describe, over and over, what a nuke can do to a human being's body.
WWE: Then. Now. Forever., Volume One (8)
Magic & Mystery: The Wednesday Witches Book Club (8)
Superman- Action Comics, Volume 1: Superman and the Men of Steel (5)
Star Wars: Darth Vader- Dark Lord of The Sith, Vol. 2: Legacy’s End (9)
Planet of the Apes Archive, Volume One: Terror on the Planet of the Apes (7)
Planet of the Apes Archive, Volume Two: Beast on the Planet of the Apes (7)
Daredevil by Mark Waid, Vol. 3 (9)
In the Valleys of the Noble Beyond: In Search of the Sasquatch (9) An excellent non-fiction book about the Author's travels through the Canadian wilderness. Less about Sasquatch than the fascinating people and cultures her encounters. Really fascinating and well-written.
Thor: The Deviants Saga (5)
Magic & Mystery: The Lion’s Tusk (7)
Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man (9) Image has been killing it with their Universal Monsters stories, and this one was no exception. Really well-done all around.
The Fantagraphics EC Artists' Library, Volume 39: My Gun is the Jury! and Other Stories Illustrated by Jack Davis and Wallace Wood (9)
Kiss: Greatest Hits, Volume 1 (8) Reprinting the two classic 70s Marvel KISS comics. So many drugs must have been passed around at Marvel in the 70s...SO many.
The Harlem Hellfighters (9)
Cereal: Sweet Darkness, Vol. 1 (9) Hilariously dry comedy, played totally straight, about cereal-mascot monsters. You need to read this book.
Popeye Classics, Vol. 1 (9) Not a huge Popeye fan, but this book has an ungodly amount of belly laughs. Swee-Pea is my new God.
Jimmy’s Bastards, Volume 1: Trigger Warning (8) Basically James Bond's dozens of bastard children team up to kill him. Fun, for what it is.
Unearthed: New Horror of Ancient Ruins (1) SUCH a disappointing collection.
Man-Wolf: The Complete Collection (8)
Magic & Mystery: A Labyrinth of Honeybees (8)
All-New X-Factor, Vol. 3: Axis (8)
New Lone Wolf & Cub, Volume 3 (9)
New Lone Wolf & Cub, Volume 4 (9)
The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library, Volume 10: Walt Disney’s Donald Duck- “Terror of the Beagle Boys” (9)
The Mask Omnibus, Volume 1 (7)
Baltimore, Volume 6: The Cult of The Red King (9)
Harrow County, Volume 5: Abandoned (8)
Swamp Thing, Volume 3: Rotworld/The Green Kingdom (8)
Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 4: Original Sin (8)
Secret Wars (9)
Warzones: Mrs. Deadpool and The Howling Commandos (9) I don't remember ever laughing so much while reading a comic. The petrified Man-Thing jokes alone are worth the price of admission.
Battleworld: Thors (9)
Guardians of the Galaxy by Brian Michael Bendis Omnibus, Vol. 1 (9)
Alien vs. Captain America (9) One of the better crossovers I've read in a while. I wish it had been a few issues longer.
Thanos: The Infinity Relativity (8)
Classic Monsters Unleashed: New Stories of Famous Creatures (8) Strong anthology about Classic Horror creatures, more hits than misses.
The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 3: Commercial Suicide (8)
The Walking Dead, Vol. 25: No Turning Back (9)
Magic & Mystery: The Wizard Who Kept Himself Suspicious (8)
Anno Dracula 1918: The Bloody Red Baron (9) I love this series...the amount of Easter egg characters and places are so much fun to recognize and/or look up. You can just fall down a research rabbit-hole. Highly recommended for Vampire and Alternate History fans.
Sea of Stars, Vol. 2 (1)
Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story (9) HYDE STREET is one of the better Horror comics out there, and this side story was exceptionally well-done, with both art and story really clicking.
Started Fiend by Alma Katsu a few nights ago - feels sort of like The Godfather with a demon for a chief enforcer and lots of family drama... I'm a little over 40% done and enjoying it so far. Lots of questions still about what this demon/fiend is and how it's actually summoned/invoked.

Finished Fiend - really interesting read. We learn more about the origins and power of the fiend but there's an open question, at least in my mind, as to whether that fiend was the real monster of the story.
