I read 41 books in August:
American Criminal (5) I'm usually a big Benjamin Percy fan, but this too-clever novella about a high-tech Robin Hood just fell flat for me.
The Problem of Susan and Other Stories (8) Graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman's NARNIA follow-up.
The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library, Volume 29: Walt Disney’s Donald Duck- “The Lonely Lighthouse on Cape Quack” (9)
Batman: Death by Design (5)
Troll Bridge (9)
Joe Golem: Occult Detective, Volume 1- The Rat Catcher and The Sunken Dead (9)
The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library, Volume 18: Walt Disney’s Donald Duck- “The Lost Peg Leg Mine” (9)
Ghost Rider, Vol. 2: Shadow Country (6)
Batman, Vol. 10: Knightmares (8)
Batman, Volume 11: The Fall and the Fallen (8)
Scalped, Volume 9: Knuckle Up (9)
Scalped, Volume 10: Trail’s End (9)
Cryptids and Cryptozoology (6)
The Fate of the Artist/The Second Fake Death of Eddie Campbell (9)
Batman, Vol. 12: City of Bane, Part 1 (1)
Starling House (8)
Batman, Vol. 13: City of Bane, Part 2 (8)
More Weight: A Salem Story (8)
Starling House (8)
Blood Sugar (7) Another insanely depressing Daniel Kraus book, this one about a quartet of inner-city doofs who want to poison Halloween candy.
The Demon, Vol. 2: The Longest Day (9) Garth Ennis' hilariously vile take on Kirby's classic character.
Batman: The Caped Crusader, Vol. 4 (8)
Batman: The Caped Crusader, Vol. 5 (6)
Magic & Mystery: Miss Gentle and the Case of the Very Flat Monk (7)
Batman: The Long Halloween- The Last Halloween (9)
Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland (9)
Unfinished Tales (9)
Marvel Age of Comics: Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars- The Epic 1980s Saga (8)
Marvel Age of Comics: Marvel Explodes- From Bullpen to Big Business (8)
Tom Strong Compendium (9)
Conan the Barbarian: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus, Vol. 5 (9)
Redcoat, Volume 2 (9)
Villains for Hire: Knight Takes King (1)
Marvel’s The Avengers: Black Widow Strikes (6)
The Final Girl Support Group (8) Not my favorite Grady Hendrix, but pretty damned good.
Marvel’s The Avengers Prelude: Fury’s Big Week (9)
Deadpool & The Merc$ for Money, Vol. 1: Mo’ Mercs, Mo’ Monkeys (9) Canceled after three volumes (0, 1, & 2), but this may be THE funniest comic I've ever read. Your mileage may vary.
Thor by Donny Cates, Vol. 2: Prey (10) Thor versus a pissed-off Donald Blake...? SOOO much better than I could have imagined.
The Last Zombie: Inferno (8)
Archie Decades: The 1960s (9)
Justice League Dark, Volume 1: In the Dark (6)
I'll have to double check to be sure, but I think I may have only read (fnished) three books in August. Stephen King's The Talisman, I. M. Eerie's The Ice Scream Truck, and Douglas Hackle's You Only Need One Kidney, so I Removed One of Mine and Made It Into My Butler; Also, My House Is Haunted by the Ghost of Blockbuster Video. That doesn't include the book I didn't finish (but spent too much time on).
Finished 7 in August.
1. A Song For the End of the World was the second story I’ve read from Mia Dalia, and I enjoyed them both. A reality show crew goes into the Bermuda Triangle and things quickly go awry. This one did not go in the direction I was expecting it to go. 4 / 5
2. Soft Flotsam Tender Jetsam was a Rapture chapbook by Clay McLead Chapman. In the past I haven’t cared much for what I‘ve read by Chapman, but he nailed this story of a father’s unusual way of dealing with his grief after the disappearance of his young daughter in the Texas floods last year. 5 / 5
3. The Black Crow Book of Best New Horror is an anthology of all new horror stories. The anthology started strong, with good stories by Lisa Tuttle, Ally Wilkes, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Lily Cade and TL Huchu. Unfortunately, the second half of the anthology didn’t maintain the opening momentum. 3.2 / 5
4. Professor Challenger: Island of Terror by William Meikle was a lot of fun. Killer velociraptors on the moors of a foggy Scottish island. What’s not to like. 4 / 5
5. Black House by King & Straub. A reread for me from 25 years ago, I enjoyed this story just as much the second time around. Looking forward to the third installment this fall. 5 / 5
6. Shadowflowers by Jeffrey Thomas was another Rapture chapbook. Interesting story about a man who contacts a mysterious cult through the dark web who claim they can resurrect his dead girlfriend. I liked this story, though by the end it felt like it was small piece to a larger storyline. 3.5 / 5
7. The Dog Stars by Peter Heller was another reread for me. A post apocalyptic story about a man looking for more in his bleak life than just survival. 5 / 5
