[#109]

I know that it isn't even September yet, but I'm looking for horror movie recommendations for Halloween. Every year, I plan out a month-long viewing schedule for the wife and I, which takes quite a bit of time since one of the rules is that the film has to be new to at least one of us. Hence, no rewatches.

Anyways, anybody have any good deep cuts they'd like to share?

The two Vincent Price PHIBES movies are a ton of fun (THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES & DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN). The late-70 Eco-Horror film THE PROPHECY has some great creature effects. (The 90s Christopher Walken film of the same name is also a blast, in case you haven't seen that one.)

I'll be back with more as I think of them, lol.

This one gave me nightmares as a kid. I watched this again maybe ten years ago and it was still fun.

I’ve had the first PHIBES in the To-Watch pile for a couple years now. I’ve been waiting to use it as part of a mini-Price marathon. Maybe it’s time to work it into the viewing schedule.

I have not seen the 70s THE PROPHECY, but must’ve stared at the VHS cover art for hours in the video store back in the day.  I’ll put it on the list.

The Walden PROPHECY was a perennial rewatch when it first came out, but it’s been about 20 years since I saw it last. I remember waffling between loving it and thinking it was kind of a mess.  Doubt my wife will dig it, but I’m going to have to rewatch it myself on one of my free days.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I’ve never even heard of this!  One of my potential sub-themes is made-for-tv horror, so this could possibly fit in that slot.  I’ll have to see if it’s available anywhere. Thanks!

This has popped up on my radar a few times. I got the sense it was more of comedy than straight horror.  Am I off-base about that?

I second this! I loved this film as a kid!

It's comedic, and VERY funny, but it has some great horrific moments. I watch it every time TCM shows it.

The film IS a mess of really interesting, but half-baked, ideas, but Walken is a blast, and Viggo Mortensen as the devil is absolutely chilling and unforgettable.

I just looked this one up and upon reading the name Sharon Tate, and then remembering the chilling stories of the Manson murders, left me feeling unsettled.

Between Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski, there's a lot of unsettling feelings that come up when watching the film. Nonetheless, if you can get past that, it's really a lot of fun, with some great performances. One of my favorite Vampire films.

horror movie recommendations for Halloween

If you want a change of pace, there are several Abbott & Costello "monster" movies (more campy & comedic) that are fun to watch

And you've probably seen them but John Carpenter's Halloween and The Fog are favorites

And late 90s Storm of the Century (tv miniseries)
